Only two weeks for a 90 metres multi-storey solar carport

Your company, Schindler Clean Energy Systems, has combined a solar carport with commercial storage. Which project are we talking about?

Reinhard Tegtmeier of Schindler CES: In Pössneck in Thuringia we built a large solar carport with a solar output of 83 kilowatts. We also installed four type-2 charge points by Mennekes. But the spine of the energy supply is the 110-kilowatt hour commercial storage unit. Its main purpose is managing the peak loads taken from the power grid.

What exactly do you mean by peak load management?

The customer operates a factory for moulding small plastic components. This is done by using electrically generated heat, i.e. at high resistance or inductive loads. The average demand of the company is around 450 kilowatts. But because the costs for the grid connection or the grid tariffs are most based on the peak loads, the management wanted to lower that peak load by 50 to 100 kilowatts. And that is what we designed the battery system to do.

What role does electric mobility play in this concept?

The four 22-kilowatt Mennekes charge points are not all that significant. We installed them because we wanted to enable the company to also have EVs in their company fleet in the future.

At what grid level did you connect the system?

At 400 volts low-voltage. The solar panels were integrated via two SMA inverters, each with 50 kilowatts.

Who supplied the solar panels?

PVP in Austria. We exclusively use double-glass panels.

And the storage unit?

That came from Ads-Tec, and they delivered it ready for connecting. Installing it was no problem at all.

What were some challenges that you can particularly remember?

Nothing really comes to mind when it comes to the electrics. More of a challenge was the carport: The problem was that we had to alter the profiles and supports to span six metres. We normally have a support every three metres and so can use preassembled components to build a carport. Once all the necessary structural alterations were complete, actually erecting the 90-metre carport took two weeks. (HS)
