Goal! Goal! Goal! Iceland is European champion – in clean energy use!

The preparations for the European soccer championship in Paris have already finished. Tonight the first game starts between France and Romania. We know, too: German Bundestrainer Jogi Löw has high flying goals. He wants to win the trophy – after World Cup two years ago.

Bad prospects for Germany and France

The stakes are high, but the prospect for the Germans is very low: Only 28 percent of electricity demand in Europe’s industrial heart is covered by wind power and solar energy. That means: Among 24 participating countries in the European Cup Germany is just number 11. The trophy will be going to Reykjavik in the far north. Countries like Austria, Sweden, Switzerland and Portugal use much more regenerative energy than the Germans.

Host country of the European Cup is France. The French only cover 18,3 percent of the electricity demand by regenerative energies – sorry, number 14 in the ranking. (HS)
