Deutsche Post DHL Group pushes e-mobility – 2,000 electric vans until end of the year – carbon free parcel delivery now also in Bochum

Deutsche Post DHL Group has started carbon-free parcel delivery in Bochum, Germany, beginning with the deployment of 24 new StreetScooters. These electric vehicles are produced by a Group subsidiary in Aachen, Germany and custom-built according to the specific requirements of parcel delivery personnel. While carbon-free parcel delivery in Bochum is initially limited to the city center, StreetScooters will be deployed to other parts of the city as well by the end of the year. A total of 65 vehicles are expected to reduce annual carbon emissions by some 195 tonnes. They are all powered by 100 percent renewable electrictiy. In 2017 Deutsche Post DHL Group will expand its carbon-free parcel delivery to all of Bochum.

2,000 StreetScooters by the end of this year

“Along with speed and flexibility, environmental protection is a major focus area when it comes to parcel delivery. Our StreetScooters allow us to provide parcel delivery that is quieter and more environmentally friendly and thus more responsive to the interests of customers and local residents. We’ll start in Bochum and then expand to other cities as well. By the end of the year we plan to deploy over 2,000 StreetScooters –the largest e-mobility project thus far in Germany,” says Jürgen Gerdes, CEO of the Post e-Commerce -Parcel division at Deutsche Post DHL Group.

Streetscooters developed and produced in Aachen

State Minister of Economic Affairs Garrelt Duin: “I am pleased about this initiative for three very good reasons. First it demonstrates that an NRW-based company –Deutsche Post DHL Group –is driving innovation in the area of electro-mobility and sustainable logistics. Second, carbon-free delivery is an important contributor to cleaner cities –today in Bochum and tomorrow in other cities as well. And third, this is all made possible with the StreetScooter, a vehicle developed and producted in Aachen.”

A more climate friendly city

Thomas Eiskirch, mayor of Bochum: “I am very pleased that Deutsche Post DHL Group will be providing carbon-free parcel delivery in Bochum. This makes Bochum the largest city in Germany in which every DHL parcel will be delivered carbon free via electro-mobility. The gradual transition from diesel vehicles to electric vehicles supports us in our transition to a becoming a more climate-friendly and overall environmentally-friendly city. Soon Bochum can boast one of the largest Streetscooter fleets in Germany. Bochum is the city for putting innovative ideas into practice.”

37 charging stations in Bochum

After charging overnight at Deutsche Post DHL Group delivery bases in Bochum the StreetScooters will be loaded with parcels in the morning before departing on their daily delivery routes. By late afternoon the electric vehicles will return to their bases, where they will be charged for the next day using green electricity. In the project’s initial phase Deutsche Post DHL Group will install a total of 37 charging stations in Bochum.

Since November 2015, Deutsche Post DHL Group has also offered its GOGREEN business customers in the Ruhr region the chance to support the use of electric vehicles throughout the region. This now applies to Bochum as well: the more customers choose Deutsche Post DHL Group’s GOGREEN services to send their items, the greater the Group’s the investment in electro-mobility for regional delivery.
