Europe Solar + Energy Storage Congress 2019 in Rome, Italy
European PV Market is Back on Track
The worldwide cumulative solar photovoltaic capacity exceeded 404 gigawatts in 2017, and is anticipated to complete an additional 106 gigawatts by the end of 2018 (GTM Research Data). Despite the dominant markets remain to be India, China and the US, the European solar sector, which grew by 28.7% in 2017, has shown a strong sign of revival after years’ recession caused by policy changes and subsidy cuts. Up to date, the solar capacity in Europe achieves 116 gigawatts, with a medium scenario projection of 15.7 gigawatts annual installations by 2021.
The recent “robust development” of the European PV Market is largely driven by its Renewable Energy Directive 2009” (RED) (2009/28/EC1), which set the overall EU target of 20% final energy consumption from renewable sources by 2020, as well as binding national targets for each Member State. On June 14, 2018, the figure is further pushed for 32% renewables share by 2030, after a revised RED agreement reached by the European Commission, the European Parliament and the European Council.
Energy Storage in Europe Increases by 49% in one Year, Adding 1.6 GW Come Online
A major trend linked to the deployment of solar is its co-location with battery storage. Proper energy storage solutions can help stabilize the grid, allow more efficient and reliable use of power, as well as add flexibility to the entire energy system. European examples can be found in the UK, where the first subsidy free utility solar & storage installations are being developed. Or in Germany & Italy, where around 60% of newly installed residential solar in 2016-2018 were coupled to battery storage.
According to Bloomberg New Energy Finance Reports, the global energy storage market will double six times between 2016 and 2030, attracting a total investment of USD$ 103 Billion, and 125 gigawatts capacity being installed – a similar trajectory to the remarkable expansion that the solar industry went through from 2000 to 2015. To capture the full potential of solar & storage in the future, the European market is indeed the ideal spot to develop, test, define and market new energy storage solutions.
