Solar cells can be repaired: Shunt removal using laser cutting

Poor quality cells from manufacturers in Europe and Asia are elaborately repaired. Managing director Patrick Müller and his 40 employees in Halle take the following approach. “We get the sorted cells delivered to our factory to repair the defects using laser-technology.” explains Stefan Stöckel, machine technician. “First, we check the back of the cell, its metallization and structure. The front side is inspected to determine defects on the surface.” The nature of the defect is then analyzed in detail, power and resistance are measured, as well as the size and location of the shunt. Those local shorts on the cells surface are made desolate and neutralized at ITS Cell using lasers. The laser cuts the contact lines of the emitter to shut down the short circuit. 

Repaired solar cells mainly sold in Europe

Hörmann ITC Cell produce 4-inch and 6-inch solar cells with two to five busbars. The revenue has been stabilized since ITC Cell was taken over by Hörmann in summer 2015. The factory has the potential to process 150 megawatts of cells a year. “We have a prosperous business and want to expand systematically.” says Patrick Müller. “This year, we are aiming to sell 50 megawatts. We have 25 permanent customers, the order situation is good.” The repaired cells are mainly sold to module manufacturers in Europe.
