New strategies towards energy independence of Mediterranean islands: PRISMI project is starting!
The kick-off meeting has just concluded! Sapienza University of Rome held the kick-off meeting of the European project PRISMI “Promoting RES Integration for Smart Mediterranean Islands”. This project aims to support local authorities of Mediterranean islands in planning their transition towards low carbon and climate change resilient energy systems in a cost-effective way.
The project activities benefit from the European Community funding within the “1st Call for Modular projects” of the transnational European Cooperation Programme for the Mediterranean area, the “Interreg MED Programme 2014-2020”. As a matter of fact, with € 509.637, the EU contributes to support the project for 85% of the total budget which is equal to € 599.573.
Namely, the PRISMI project aims at developing an integrated toolkit (based on a transnational approach) able to assess and map RES for the targeted elaboration of energy scenarios and related techno-economic feasibility analysis. In order to guarantee the implementation and evaluate the application of such Toolkit in different Mediterranean islands, the afore-mentioned project envisages five investigation areas characterized by different environmental, economic, energy and landscape features: the island of Favignana (Italy), the island of Korčula (Croatia), the island of Tilos (Greece), the Akamas Peninsula (Cyprus) and the island of Gozo (Malta).
The project, with a 18 months duration, is headed by Sapienza University of Rome and involves other six European partners:
- Centre for Renewable Energy Sources and Saving;
- University of Zagreb;
- Cyprus Energy Agency;
- Piraeus University of Applied Sciences;
- Malta Intelligent Energy Management Agency;
- Municipality of Favignana.
Considering the involvement of local administrations, the project has the objective of creating a network, to which all interested administrations, agencies, private and public organizations can join free of charge. Such Network will therefore give the start to a real know-how exchange, which will allow the implementation of innovative and sustainable strategies and methodologies, in order to increase the share of renewable local energy sources in MED islands and the awareness of the local communities. In this regard, the project envisages some funds to allow the organizations joining the network to participate in some events called ‘Regional Involvement Events’. During such events, the project outcomes will be disclosed and useful tools will be presented for the implementation of the spread of RES in MED islands.
